Youth Leadership for Reading Skills Development
Artham Fellowship Program 2024-25
Artham Fellowship Program 2024-25
The Youth Leadership for Literacy Skills Development Program is a unique initiative designed to empower Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) Officers, especially those pursuing degrees in education, with the knowledge and leadership skills necessary to champion literacy programs in their communities. This program aims to cultivate a new generation of leaders who will actively contribute to improving literacy rates and promoting inclusive education across the Philippines. Artham means "understanding" in the Telugu language from India.
Program Overview
With literacy being a critical foundation for personal and community development, this program seeks to equip SK officers—youth leaders in their respective barangays—with the tools to lead impactful literacy initiatives. The focus is on both leadership development and the enhancement of skills related to literacy education, ensuring that SK officers not only promote literacy but also actively support the development of programs that address local needs.
The Youth Leadership for Literacy Skills Development Program empowers youth leaders to:
Lead community-based literacy programs that encourage reading, writing, and critical thinking skills.
Support school-based literacy initiatives that bridge gaps in education access, especially in underserved areas.
Partner with local stakeholders to enhance educational resources and opportunities for marginalized communities.
Key Features
Leadership Training for Education Majors:
SK Officers who are currently studying education in college will receive specialized training that links their academic knowledge with leadership skills. They will learn how to lead literacy campaigns, engage stakeholders, and create sustainable programs that address the unique literacy challenges of their barangays.
Community-Based Literacy Projects:
Participants will be guided to design and implement literacy projects tailored to the specific needs of their communities. These projects may include after-school reading programs, mobile libraries, literacy workshops, and mentorship initiatives that engage both children and adults.
Peer Mentorship and Collaboration:
SK Officers will be encouraged to form peer networks to share best practices, collaborate on literacy initiatives, and support each other in their leadership journeys. This peer mentorship model fosters a collaborative environment for developing innovative literacy solutions.
Integration of Digital Literacy:
Recognizing the growing importance of digital skills, the program will include modules on digital literacy to help participants lead initiatives that address both traditional literacy (reading and writing) and modern digital literacy. This includes teaching basic computer skills, internet safety, and using digital tools for education.
Learning Methods
The program utilizes a blend of learning methodologies to ensure participants are fully equipped to lead literacy initiatives in their communities:
Workshops and Webinars:
SK Officers will participate in interactive workshops and webinars focusing on leadership development, literacy strategies, and project management. These sessions will be facilitated by experienced educators and literacy advocates.
Project-Based Learning:
Participants will work on real-life projects, where they will apply their knowledge to design and implement literacy programs in their barangays. This hands-on approach ensures that participants gain practical experience in leading community-based initiatives.
Mentorship from Educators and Literacy Experts:
SK Officers will have access to mentors from the education sector who will provide guidance and feedback throughout the program. These mentors will help participants refine their literacy projects and develop strategies for long-term sustainability.
Resource Sharing and Networking:
Participants will be given access to a library of resources, including teaching materials, literacy guides, and case studies of successful literacy programs. An online platform will also be set up to allow for ongoing networking and resource-sharing among SK Officers.
